What ever happened to play?
Whatever happened to going outside?
Whatever happened to endless, idle days of glorious reading?
Whatever happened to reading out loud?

Well, guess what? Glorious, delicious, delirious summer is here again and the time is right for a few stolen moments when children can truly PLAY! I had a bright-eyed little boy in the store the other day who, for the first time this year, did not have homework, so he asked to come to Diane's Books! It's time for children and families to truly rediscover the outdoors, the smell and taste of summer, to watch those fluffy clouds, to see a gibbous moon, which I recently reveled in. And the books, as I have said before, are truly, truly an embarrassment of riches - truly, every genre - for children and grownups. And please, please, do not forget to read out loud to your children, forever. This is not a choice - JUST DO IT. Snuggle up on those long car rides or in a favorite chair and magic will happen, now, next year, 10 years from now. As Bill Gates Jr. said in a recent interview, it was the power of the stories that his grandmother read out loud to him that fostered the belief in him that the possibilities of greatness were endless. Not one other single solitary component - only the power of stories. BOOKS TRULY DO AND CAN CHANGE LIVES FOREVER!
